The Homestead Trail follows the former Union Pacific line for about 40 miles, from its main trailhead at 2nd and Court Streets in Beatrice north through Pickrell and Cortland to Saltillo Road in Lincoln. The surface is crushed limestone. To the south the old line continues as the Chief Standing Bear Trail toward Marysville, Kansas.
