About Cortland

Cortland is a village of 504 in northern Gage County on US 77, about 21 miles south of Lincoln and 16 miles north of Beatrice. The Homestead Trail passes through on the old Union Pacific grade, and students attend Norris schools.

History

A Highland Center post office served the area from about 1872. Joseph H. Millard of Omaha, a Union Pacific director, bought the town site from Alfred Gale in 1883, and the plat was filed on February 4, 1884, on the Union Pacific line between Lincoln and Beatrice; Henry Spellman opened the first store that winter. The post office was spelled Courtland for its first year. The name is said to come from Cortland, New York, and the early name Galesburg likely recalls the Gale land. The Bank of Cortland opened about 1885, and the census peak was 509 in 1890.
