About Holmesville
Holmesville is an unincorporated community of about 60 people in central Gage County, on the east side of the Big Blue River about 7 miles southeast of Beatrice and 5 miles north of Wymore.
History
Morgan L. Holmes, a New York dry-goods man who came west for his health in 1879, opened a stone quarry here and laid out the town in June 1880 on the Marysville & Blue Valley branch of the Union Pacific; the post office opened that November with Holmes as postmaster. T. Patz opened the first store that winter, a school followed in 1881, and Holmes shipped more than 1,000 carloads of stone that year. Whitesville, within half a mile of the site, had been Gage County's first legal county seat.
