History Nebraska marker No. 317, at the southeast corner of the city park on 4th Street in St. Paul, honors Grover Cleveland "Pete" Alexander (1887–1950), born near Elba, who won 373 major-league games, tied for the National League record, threw a record 16 shutouts in 1916, struck out Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in Game 7 of the 1926 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1938. He spent his off-seasons and last years in St. Paul and died here on November 4, 1950. The marker once stood at the US 281–NE 92 junction south of town.
