History Nebraska marker No. 188, “Garfield County,” put up by the Garfield County Centennial Committee and the Nebraska State Historical Society, stands at the northwest corner of the courthouse grounds on South 8th Avenue in Burwell. It tells of Charles H. Jones’s settlement at the forks of the North Loup and Calamus in 1872, the Sioux raids that led to Fort Hartsuff, the post office called The Forks, and the county seat’s move from Willow Springs to Burwell in 1890.
