Schuyler is the county seat of Colfax County, in the Platte Valley about two miles north of the river. The Union Pacific renamed its Shell Creek Station here in 1870, and the city, like the county, carries the name of Schuyler Colfax, a former vice president of the United States. The Oregon and Mormon trail corridor, the transcontinental railroad and later the Lincoln Highway all ran through this stretch of the valley; U.S. Highway 30 and Nebraska Highway 15 meet in town.

For a short period in 1870 Schuyler was the western railhead of the Texas cattle trade and served as the first cow town in Nebraska, handling tens of thousands of cattle before the shipping point moved farther west. Meatpacking still defines the local economy. The Cargill beef plant, operating since 1968, is by far the largest employer, with roughly two thousand workers. That work has reshaped the city: the 2020 census counted 6,547 residents, about seventy percent Hispanic or Latino, with a median age under thirty and more than a third of the population under eighteen.

The building most worth stopping for is the Oak Ballroom in the city park, put up by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s to a design by the local architect Emiel Christensen. It was built from native oak and from stone salvaged out of the ruins of a local milling company, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It still functions as an event hall.

Schuyler is a city in and the county seat of Colfax County, Nebraska, sitting along the Union Pacific main line and US Highway 30 where it meets Nebraska Highway 15. The site was founded in 1866 as Shell Creek Station and renamed Schuyler in 1870, honoring Vice President Schuyler Colfax — the same figure the county itself is named for. The young town briefly served as one of Nebraska’s earliest “cow towns” in 1870, a stopover on cattle drives north from Texas. Schuyler’s modern economy has been shaped since 1968 by a large Cargill beef-processing plant, one of the region’s biggest employers, whose workforce has made Schuyler one of the most Hispanic/Latino cities in Nebraska — roughly three-quarters of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino as of recent estimates. The city’s downtown historic district and several other buildings, including the 1921–22 Colfax County Courthouse (a Renaissance Revival design by architect George A. Berlinghof), the Oak Ballroom, the Carnegie Library, City Hall, and the U.S. Post Office with its Depression-era mural, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Schuyler is the birthplace of NFL linebacker Kyle Emanuel and one-time Michigan governor Kim Sigler.
