Brainard, Nebraska
Brainard is a village in Oak Creek Township, Butler County, Nebraska, in east-central Nebraska. With a population of approximately 336 (2020), Brainard is a small community known for its strong Czech heritage and for Oak Creek Sporting Club, a well-known regional shooting-sports and pheasant-hunting destination.
History
Brainard was laid out in 1878 when the railroad was extended to that point. The village was named after David Brainerd, an 18th-century missionary to Native Americans, though the spelling was altered. Czech immigrant families were prominent among early settlers, and that heritage remains part of the community's identity today. Brainard native Lyle Talbot went on to a long career as a Hollywood actor, and Archbishop Jerome Hanus, a Brainard native, later led the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Brainard's population has held fairly steady in recent decades — 330 in 2010 and 336 in 2020. Area students attend school in the East Butler Public Schools district. The village is also known regionally for Oak Creek Sporting Club, a shooting-sports and hunting destination that draws visitors from across the state.
