Hastings, Nebraska
Hastings is the county seat of Adams County and the largest city in south-central Nebraska, located at the crossroads of US-6, US-281, and US-34. Founded in 1872 at the junction of two railroad lines, Hastings quickly grew into a regional center for industry, education, and culture. Today it is a city of roughly 24,000 people and serves as the commercial, medical, and cultural hub for the surrounding region.
Hastings is best known as the birthplace of Kool-Aid, invented by local entrepreneur Edwin Perkins in 1927. The city celebrates this legacy each August with Kool-Aid Days, drawing visitors from across the country. The Hastings Museum & Lied IMAX — Nebraska's largest municipal museum — features natural history exhibits, a planetarium, and extensive regional history collections including artifacts from the city's WWII-era Naval Ammunition Depot, the largest of its kind in the United States.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, anchors the city's educational identity and contributes to its vibrant arts scene. Historic downtown Hastings features brick-lined streets, murals, and year-round events including farmers markets, the Veterans Day Parade, and the Celebration of Lights. Burlington Station and the Chautauqua Pavilion are among 23 sites on the National Register of Historic Places in Adams County.
History
Hastings was founded in 1872 when two competing railroad lines — the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad and the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad — crossed in Adams County. The town was named for Thomas D. Hastings, a railroad civil engineer. The intersection of two major lines made Hastings an immediate transportation and commercial hub, and the city was incorporated in 1874.
The late 19th century brought rapid growth as Hastings became the primary market town for a wide swath of south-central Nebraska. Grain elevators, milling operations, and retail trade were established, and the founding of Hastings College in 1882 added an educational and cultural dimension that distinguished the city from other regional centers.
During World War II, the federal government selected Hastings as the site of a massive Naval Ammunition Depot — one of the largest munitions manufacturing and storage facilities in the United States. The depot employed thousands of workers from across the region and covered approximately 48,000 acres south of the city. After the war, portions were converted to industrial use as the Hastings Industrial Complex.
In 1927, Edwin Perkins — a Hastings entrepreneur who operated a mail-order general store — invented Kool-Aid by concentrating his liquid Fruit Smack drink into a powdered form. The product became one of the most recognized beverage brands in American history, and Hastings celebrates this legacy each August with Kool-Aid Days.
