About Beverly
Beverly is an unincorporated community in Hitchcock County, on Frenchman Creek near US 6 about 8 miles west-northwest of Culbertson and 8 miles east-southeast of Palisade. It survives as an election precinct and an elevator site.
History
A post office named Beverly, for Beverly, Massachusetts, opened on June 23, 1881, and the town was platted in 1887. The Burlington's branch up Frenchman Creek from Culbertson opened to Beverly, 10 miles, on November 1, 1889, and in 1890 the state gazetteer called it "the present terminus" of the line toward Holyoke, Colorado, with John Hudson as station agent. The track went on to Palisade in December 1891 and Imperial in 1892.
Beverly never grew beyond a few dozen people; its largest population was about 35. In 1940 it was described with Palisade as being on the Burlington branch and on Highway 6. The post office closed in 1945. A grain elevator remains, and the track, still in place, is leased to the Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado Railway.
