About Mount Clare
Mount Clare is a former town in western Nuckolls County, on the ridge between the Little Blue and Republican rivers, about 8 miles west of Nelson and 8 miles south-southeast of Lawrence.
History
A post office named Arnsburg opened here in 1887 and was renamed Mount Clare in 1889. According to Fitzpatrick's Nebraska Place-Names, the name came from the town's position on the divide between the Blue and the Republican and from Capt. Clare Adams of Omaha. Mount Clare was a station on the Missouri Pacific, and in 1890 it had about 35 people; a Methodist church was built in the 1890s.
The town reached its largest size, about 131 people, in 1920. The post office closed in 1945.
