About St. Charles

St. Charles is a rural Catholic community in St. Charles Township, southern Cuming County, about 4 miles southwest of West Point. It is the home of St. Anthony Catholic Church and its cemetery, and the St. Charles Pioneer Cemetery.

History

Catholic settlers, most of them German, took up land near the Elkhorn here around 1860, and Benedictine priests from Nebraska City were holding services by 1862, the first religious services in the county. In the spring of 1867 the first church building in Cuming County, a log church on land given by Friedrich and Augusta Grovijohn, went up here; it became the parish of St. Anthony of Padua. The pioneer cemetery, begun on the Alois Drueke homestead, dates to 1861.

St. Charles precinct was created in May 1871 and counted 769 people in 1880. In 1890 a St. Charles post office stood near the Elkhorn about four miles south of West Point. The parish school has since been torn down; St. Anthony's remains an active parish of about 60 members, sharing its pastor with St. Mary's in West Point, St. Aloysius at Aloys and St. Boniface at Monterey.
