About Telbasta
Telbasta is a rural hamlet in western Washington County, about 4 miles northeast of Fontanelle and 9 miles north of Arlington. Salem Lutheran Church, 11022 11th St., and its cemetery stand nearby, along with the Telbasta Cemetery.
History
The Telbasta post office ran from March 17, 1890, to September 20, 1900; the origin of the name is not known. In 1921 it was a small hamlet with a store. Salem Lutheran Church was founded in 1860 by German immigrants and is still an active country congregation.
A few miles northeast, the Nero post office opened in 1871, was renamed Vacoma in 1882 and closed in 1901; only the Vacoma Cemetery remains.
