About Swedeburg
Swedeburg is an unincorporated Swedish farm village on US 77 in Stocking Township, Saunders County, about 5 miles south of Wahoo and 5 miles north of Ceresco. The Covenant church of 1909 and the Fridhem Cemetery remain.
History
Thirty families came directly from Sweden in the spring of 1869, and about 100 more followed that fall. A Lutheran congregation formed in 1872 and divided in 1876, when the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Mission Church, Fridhem, was organized; it built its first church a mile south in 1877, joined the Mission Covenant in 1885 and built the present church on Ash Street in 1909. The post office opened on August 19, 1873, in the Erickson store.
The Chicago & North Western reached Swedeburg in 1886, when the townsite was laid out; at its peak six trains a day stopped, and the last ran on September 1, 1981. The village had general stores, a hardware, a blacksmith, elevators and the State Bank of Swedeburg (1907–1931). The school joined Wahoo in 1967, and the post office closed in 1972.
