About Ceresco
Ceresco is a farming village in Saunders County, on U.S. Highway 77 south of Wahoo. The 2020 census counted 919 residents, against 889 in 2010 and 920 in 2000. The village covers about four tenths of a square mile. It has a public library, a public park and three Protestant churches. The elementary school feeds into the Raymond Central School District. Policing is handled by a small part-time force, and the fire department runs four trucks.
History
Ceresco came together in 1886, when a rail branch was built between Lincoln and Fremont. It was the first town on that line inside Saunders County, close to the Lancaster County line. Before the railroad, mail arrived on a star route that linked Ceresco with Swedeburg, Wahoo, Colon, Cedar Bluffs and Fremont. The name was carried here from Michigan. Richard Nelson and Hod Andrus came from Ceresco, Michigan in 1868 and named the new town after their old one.
The 1895 fire
In 1895 a fire destroyed most of the business section. The town rebuilt. Accounts written not long afterward describe the population as largely Swedish.
