About Sybrant

Sybrant is the site of a former post office in the Sandhills of southern Rock County, about 20 miles south of Newport and 21 miles south-southeast of Bassett. The Sybrant Cemetery, still in use, is reached by county roads and the last stretch across pasture; directions from 2000 run about 8 miles south of Bassett on US 183, then 13 miles east to the end of the pavement and on by section roads.

History

David Oscar Sybrant, born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1831, homesteaded here in July 1886. He helped start a church and school and gave three acres for the cemetery. The post office opened on April 25, 1895, with Sybrant as postmaster until his death, and closed on February 29, 1932. The store was later run by Don Sybrant and others, including Jim McFadden, Charles Lane and Ora Harlan. A Methodist (later EUB) church was begun in 1917 as a branch of Rose and Duff.
