About Blanche
Blanche was a rural post office and store in Enterprise precinct in northeastern Chase County, near Stinking Water Creek, about 11 miles south of Elsie and 18 miles north of Wauneta. The location is approximate; the post office moved at least once.
History
The Blanche post office opened on June 18, 1887, and was named for the daughter of G. C. Davis, its postmaster. In its early days Ellen Kelso, wife of a Methodist minister, kept the office about 3 miles east of the later site, on the north edge of Stinking Water Creek by a spring under a rock ledge. Neighbors built the Kelsos a sod house, a store was added, and Saturday baseball games drew the neighborhood. The Ed Hine family homesteaded nearby in 1888. Blanche never had a railroad, and the post office closed on February 28, 1920. The cemetery remains; its records are kept at the Imperial library.
