Burton was platted in 1905 and named for a local storekeeper. Its most notable historical distinction is a bitter rivalry with Springview over county-seat status — Keya Paha County's own history records the contest between the two towns, which Springview won on March 24, 1885, owing to its more central location in the county, a rare documented near-miss at becoming a county seat for a town this small.

Burton is an incorporated village today, with a 2020 Census population of just 11 — one of the smallest incorporated villages in Nebraska, and one of only two incorporated municipalities in Keya Paha County alongside Springview. An Assembly of God church has historically served the community, and the local economy is Sandhills/ranching country like the rest of the county.
