Darr, Nebraska

Darr is an abandoned town site in Dawson County, on U.S. Highway 30 and Nebraska Highway 21 between Cozad and Lexington, at about 2,450 feet.

History

Darr was platted in 1902 and named for George B. Darr, the original owner of the town site. It was known at times as Cayote, or Coyote. The post office opened in 1902 and was discontinued in 1923.

In 2022 the Dawson County commissioners voted to vacate the streets and alleys of that original plat, among them Coyote Street, Bridge Street, Davis Street, Spencer Street, Third Avenue and Second Avenue, so that a hay company could subdivide the ground. Property owners attended the hearing and a surveyor confirmed their access would not be affected. Some land at the site is still held privately.

Location and Access

The site lies on the Lincoln Highway corridor between Cozad and Lexington. There is nothing to visit, and it is listed here as an abandoned town site rather than as a destination.
