Ellis, Nebraska

Ellis is an unincorporated community in Gage County, in the southern tier of Nebraska. It was established along the Rock Island Railroad line and named in honour of John R. Ellis, a Beatrice banker.

History

The post office at Ellis opened in 1887 and ran until 1958. Beyond the railroad origin, the naming and those post office dates, very little about the working life of the place has been written down, and no population figure has ever been published for it at any census.

Location and Access

U.S. Highway 136 passes the north side of Ellis before swinging north. Beatrice, the Gage County seat, lies to the east along the same road, and Harbine is the next community west.

Points of Interest

Ellis Cemetery stands half a mile north of the community in Lincoln Township, on the east side of the road. Its burials run from the eighteen hundreds into the 1990s, which makes it the clearest surviving record of the families who lived here.
