About Hoskins
Hoskins is a village in the south-west part of Wayne County, in north-east Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 267 residents. The village covers about a third of a square mile. Trinity Lutheran School operates in town.
History
Settlers of German descent, arriving from Wisconsin and from Germany, took up land in the area between 1869 and 1872. Frank Puls is generally named as the first of them. They settled near Springbranch Creek, and the place was first called Springbranch. Hoskins itself was established in 1881, when the railroad was extended to that point. Sources disagree about whom the name honours, so it is left unstated here.
Early years
The first settlers hunted deer and prairie chicken. Supplies meant a two day trip to Wisner. Fuel was scarce enough that hay was burned for heat. Drought was a recurring problem, snow drifted twenty feet deep in the winter of 1880 and 1881, and the blizzard of 1888 is remembered as the worst of them.
