About Rosalie

Rosalie is a village in Thurston County, in north-eastern Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 159 residents, essentially unchanged from 160 in 2010. The village covers about 0.20 square miles and stands at roughly 1,340 feet. Walthill is about 6 miles north, Lyons about 8 miles south and Pender about 10 miles west.

The Omaha Reservation

Rosalie lies within the boundaries of the Omaha Reservation, which covers most of Thurston County and extends into Cuming and Burt counties in Nebraska and Monona County in Iowa. The reservation belongs to the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, a federally recognised nation whose seat of government is at Macy. Pender, Walthill and the northern edge of Bancroft also fall within the reservation boundaries.

History

Rosalie was platted in 1906, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point, and a post office opened the same year. The village is named for Rosalie La Flesche Farley, a daughter of Joseph La Flesche, the last traditionally selected principal chief of the Omaha. She managed grazing leases and other financial transactions on the reservation and married Edward Farley of Bancroft. Her sisters were Susette La Flesche, the writer and activist, and Susan La Flesche Picotte, the physician. The Bancroft and Rosalie schools merged in 1982.

With around 155-160 residents today, Rosalie remains one of Thurston County's, and Nebraska's, smallest villages, its name a lasting tribute to a member of the influential La Flesche family central to 19th-century Omaha tribal history.
