About Hubbell
Hubbell is a village in Thayer County, Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 63 residents, down from 68 in 2010 and 73 in 2000. The village covers about a third of a square mile. The surrounding country is farmed in corn, soybeans, milo and alfalfa, on both dry land and irrigated ground.
History
Hubbell was platted in 1880, when the railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Hubbell H. Johnson, who owned the original townsite. What first drew settlers to the area was the water in Rose Creek, steady enough to turn grist and saw mills. Once the milling era passed, the town's attention shifted to agriculture and has stayed there.
Today
The village is run by a village board and keeps an office on Indiana Street, open part of the week. The population has drifted slowly downward for several decades. The singer Lucas Hoge grew up in Hubbell.
