About Lyman
Lyman is a village in Scotts Bluff County, in the western Nebraska panhandle. It lies less than a mile from the Wyoming border, south of Horse Creek, a tributary of the North Platte River. Nebraska Highway 92 runs east and west through the village. Lyman covers about 0.40 square miles. The population was 259 at the 2020 census, down from 341 in 2010 and 421 in 2000. The village is part of the Scottsbluff micropolitan statistical area.
History
Lyman was incorporated as a village in 1922, when the Union Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for the bankers Charles and W. H. Lyman. The semi-arid climate of this corner of the state slowed settlement compared with parts of Nebraska that get more rain.
Settlers
Volga German families were among those who settled in and around Lyman. Documented surnames include Becker, Benzel, Deines, Heil, Lissmann, Morgheim, Nagel, Strecker, Welsch and Zitterkopf. These families traced back to colonies on the Volga such as Kraft, Kolb, Kratzke, Norka and Dietel.
