About Mitchell
Mitchell is a city in Scotts Bluff County, north-west of Scottsbluff, and part of the Scottsbluff micropolitan statistical area. The population was 1,548 at the 2020 census, down from 1,702 in 2010. The city covers about 0.67 square miles at an elevation of roughly 3,950 feet. U.S. Highway 26 runs east and west through town along Broadway Street, and Nebraska Highway 29 runs north and south on 19th Avenue.
History
Mitchell was established in 1900, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended westward to the area. The city was incorporated in 1902. It was named after the historic Fort Mitchell nearby, which had been named for General Robert B. Mitchell, a Union Army brigadier general during the Civil War. The fort operated from 1864 to 1867, guarding travellers on the Great Platte River Road. No physical traces of it remain.
The county fair
The Scotts Bluff County Fair, first organised in 1887, is held in Mitchell each year. The fairgrounds lie just west of the city and host other events through the year. Mitchell Public Schools operates an elementary school and a high school. The city also maintains the Scenic Knolls Golf Course, a swimming pool and an airfield.
