About Colon
Colon is a village in Saunders County, north of the county seat at Wahoo and a short distance west of U.S. Route 77. It covers about an eighth of a square mile, which makes it one of the smallest incorporated places in the county. The 2020 census counted 107 residents, against 110 in 2010 and 138 in 2000. The village has a post office and a bank branch.
History
Colon was first established in 1879, then moved to its present site in 1886 when the railroad was extended to that point. It incorporated in 1894. The name came from Michigan: the first postmaster, a man named Taylor, had come from Colon, Michigan, and named the new office after his old home. Before the railroad arrived, mail reached Colon on a star route that also served Ceresco, Swedeburg, Wahoo, Cedar Bluffs and Fremont, with stagecoach service twice a week. St Joseph's Church served the village for many years. Emmett Louis Murphy, a lawyer and civil servant, was born here.
