Malmo was platted in 1887 when the railroad extended to the area and incorporated as a village in 1893. Most early settlers were natives of Sweden, and the town was named for the Swedish city of Malmö.
The smallest of Saunders County's incorporated towns, Malmo had a 2020 population of just 94 across 0.14 square miles.
