Huntley, Nebraska
Huntley, in Harlan County, grew out of an earlier nearby settlement called Bainbridge, established around 1872; when railroad construction made that site impractical, a new depot and townsite were laid out just south, along the bottomland by Turkey Creek, becoming Huntley. The town was incorporated in 1913. Its name is said to honor a Kansas City & Omaha Railroad official named Huntley — but local records make no mention of anyone by that name, so the origin is unconfirmed.
By the 1890s Huntley had a two-department school, churches, stores, and grain elevators, and by 1902 it reportedly shipped more grain than any other town in the county — though the town also suffered repeated fires through its history. Huntley shares its ZIP code, 68971, with nearby Republican City, and has no post office of its own. As of the 2020 Census, its population is 33, down from 67 in 2000 — one of the steepest sustained declines of any town in the county.
