Doniphan was platted in 1879 by pioneer William J. Burger as a midway point between Hastings and Grand Island along the St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad, and was incorporated in 1884. The town takes its name from Col. John Doniphan, a St. Joseph, Missouri attorney for the railroad. Doniphan is home to Doniphan-Trumbull School, serving grades 7-12, and is part of the Grand Island metropolitan area.
