About Hyannis
Hyannis is the county seat of Grant County, Nebraska, and the county's largest village. It sits in the Sandhills, where Nebraska Highway 61, running north and south, crosses Nebraska Highway 2, running east and west. The 2020 census counted 165 residents, down from 182 in 2010 and 287 in 2000. The village covers about half a square mile. A Panhandle Trails intercity bus stops three times a day, Monday through Friday.
History
Grant County was created on 31 March 1887 and named for Ulysses S. Grant. Hyannis was laid out in 1888, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point. A railroad official named it after Hyannis, Massachusetts. The county seat came to Hyannis by election over nearby Whitman, and Whitman residents at first refused to hand over the county records. By 1890 the town had about 200 people, along with three stores, a lumberyard, a newspaper, a drug store, a blacksmith, a saloon, a hotel and a livery. Theodore Roosevelt stopped here by special train before the 1904 election and spoke from a bandstand.
Buildings
The Hyannis Hotel, built in 1898 and also known as the Hotel DeFair, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A courthouse put up in 1907 was replaced in 1957.
Hyannis, the seat of Grant County, was platted in 1888 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad reached the site, taking its name from Hyannis, Massachusetts. It won the county seat from the original seat, Whitman, in a relocation election shortly after its founding. Hyannis sits at the junction of Nebraska Highways 2 and 61 in the heart of the Sandhills, and is home to the National Register-listed 1898 Hotel DeFair, still operating today as the Hyannis Hotel.
