Oconto Nebraska

Oconto is a village in Custer County, Nebraska, founded in 1887 — originally platted as “Olax” before being renamed due to a naming conflict elsewhere in the state — and formally incorporated in 1906. It sits at the junction of Nebraska Highways 21 and 40. The name's origin is disputed: some sources credit a pioneer settler, while the more commonly cited explanation traces it to Oconto, Wisconsin, itself derived from a Menominee word meaning “place of the pickerel.” Oconto has weathered real hardship: an October 31, 2000 tornado destroyed the community center and downtown businesses and damaged 40 homes, though all 23 people sheltering at a Halloween party in a basement — 19 of them children — escaped unharmed; a new community center was rebuilt by 2003. The village later served as a viewing site for the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. With a population of 138 (2020 census), Oconto remains a small but resilient farming community in southern Custer County.
