Blue Hill is a city in northern Webster County, situated between the Republican and Little Blue Rivers. Proprietor Solomon B. Rohrer of Hagerstown, Maryland, surveyed and platted the town in September 1878 at the junction of the Hastings branch of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad and the Nebraska and Colorado Railroad; the first train arrived that December, and the young town grew quickly, reaching a population of roughly 1,000 by early 1882. Sources differ on how Blue Hill got its name — the town's own history credits "the bluish atmosphere surrounding the hill on which the village is located," while an older scholarly compilation and a regional history instead trace it to the town's position near the Little Blue River. The town was briefly considered for the name "Belmont" before "Blue Hill" was settled on.

A major fire on June 24, 1890, destroyed the buildings along the north side of Main Street; arson was suspected but never confirmed, and the town rebuilt largely in brick, much of which still stands downtown today. Blue Hill and Red Cloud are Webster County's only two incorporated cities — every other municipality in the county is a village.

Blue Hill, platted in 1878 along the Burlington & Missouri and Nebraska and Colorado railroads, is one of only two incorporated cities in Webster County. Its name is variously explained as a reference to the bluish haze over its namesake hill or to its position near the Little Blue River; a 1890 fire led much of downtown to be rebuilt in brick.

Blue Hill sits in northern Webster County, which borders Adams County to the north, Clay County to the northeast, Nuckolls County to the east, Franklin County to the west and Kearney County to the northwest. Jewell and Smith counties in Kansas adjoin Webster County to the southeast and southwest.

In Webster County: Bladen (population 205) lies about 8 miles west; Cowles (21) about 9 miles south; Red Cloud (962), the county seat, about 17 miles south-southwest; Guide Rock (199) about 19 miles south-southeast; and Inavale about 20 miles south-southwest. Blue Hill and Red Cloud are the county’s only two incorporated cities.

Beyond the county line: Hastings, the Adams County seat and the largest city in the region, is about 18 miles north; Campbell in Franklin County about 15 miles west along Nebraska Highway 4; and Lawrence in Nuckolls County about 10 miles east-southeast. Distances given here are straight-line rather than driving distances.

Points of Interest & Events

Blue Hill Historical Mural. A community mural chosen by the Blue Hill Mural Committee tells the town’s story through thirteen painted landmarks — a country schoolhouse, a steam engine and railroad, the 1923 grade school, the town’s distinctive arrow, the grain elevators, a church, the 1912 railroad depot and the IGA grocery store — with thirteen smaller “hidden gems” worked into the scene, among them sports medals, books of local history, a bowling ball and the school mascot.

Ash Hollow Public Golf Course, 433 N. Willson Street, is a nine-hole public course of roughly 2,700 yards from the blue tees, with bent-grass greens, natural fairways and water in play on several holes. Parks and pool. The City Park at the northwest end of Gage Street has modern playground equipment and picnic tables; a second park east of the ball diamonds adds playground equipment, restrooms, running water and a covered picnic area; and tennis, basketball and pickleball courts sit near the Blue Hill Aquatic Center and the school.

Annual events. The city’s own calendar lists an Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter, a Memorial Day celebration, city-wide garage sales on the second Saturday of June, a Fourth of July festival, and a Holiday Bazaar on the first Saturday of December.

Education & Health

Blue Hill Community Schools, 606 South Sycamore Street, serves the community as home of the Bobcats, with an elementary building (402-756-2085) and a high school (402-756-3043) on the same campus.

The Blue Hill Public Library, 317 W. Gage Street, (402) 756-2701, is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Health care. The Blue Hill Medical Clinic, 102 N. Pine Street, (402) 756-2141, provides family practice care as part of the Webster County Community Hospital family, open Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., and Friday mornings to 4 p.m. After the dismissal of a nurse practitioner in February 2026 prompted community concern about a possible closure, the hospital confirmed it had no plans to close the clinic; it is staffed by two nurse practitioners, has pursued federal Rural Health Clinic designation, and is acquiring the Blue Hill therapy facility from Mary Lanning Healthcare to broaden local services.

The nearest hospital is Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud, about 17 miles south-southwest. Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, about 18 miles north, is the larger regional facility.

Highway Access

U.S. Highway 281 runs north and south through Blue Hill; the city describes itself as “located 40 miles south of Interstate 80 on U.S. Highway 281.” Northbound it reaches Hastings in about 18 miles and continues to the interstate; southbound it runs to Red Cloud and the Kansas state line, which lies roughly 22 miles south of town.

Nebraska Highway 4 carries east–west traffic, running west through Campbell toward its terminus at U.S. 6 and U.S. 34, and east through Lawrence, Davenport and Bruning on its way across southern Nebraska. The two routes run together into Blue Hill and separate just south of the city.
