Agate Nebraska 69336 (US-20 MM 22)

Agate, Nebraska

Agate is a small unincorporated community in Sioux County, Nebraska, on Nebraska Highway 29 about 19 miles south-southeast of Harrison, the county seat. It takes its name from James H. Cook's Agate Springs Ranch, itself named for the agate deposits found in the surrounding hills.

Agate is best known today as the gateway to Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, a nationally significant paleontological site preserving Miocene-era fossil beds discovered on Cook's ranch. The community's own post office operated for nearly 70 years, from 1899 to 1968.

History

Agate grew up around James H. Cook's Agate Springs Ranch, taking its name from the agate deposits scattered through the nearby hills. A post office was established in 1899 and remained in continuous operation until 1968, nearly seven decades of service to this remote corner of the Nebraska Panhandle. Cook's ranch became internationally known after significant Miocene mammal fossils were discovered there, a legacy preserved today at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.
