About St. Stephens
St. Stephens was a Missouri River town in the northeastern corner of Richardson County, about a mile north of Arago. Nothing of the town is documented today, and the map point is approximate.
History
Stephen Story is said to have had a cabin here before the territory opened, and he and Gen. Benjamin F. Loan laid out St. Stephens in the spring of 1855. That year a store kept by S. F. Nuckolls & Co. and Robert Archer's hotel were the whole town. A ferry crossed the Missouri, and T. C. Sicafoos was the first postmaster. By 1861 St. Stephens was the largest town in the county, with two stores, two saloons, a blacksmith and Allan Gleason's ferry.
Arago, founded a mile to the south in 1858, absorbed it, and St. Stephens precinct was later joined to Barada precinct. By 1917 the town was "known only to the old settlers," though the house Thomas McManus built in 1855, called the oldest in the county, still stood.
