About Saint Bernard
Saint Bernard is an unincorporated community in northern Platte County, about 4 miles east-northeast of Lindsay and 4 miles northwest of Cornlea, in St. Bernard Township.
History
Saint Bernard was laid out in June 1878 as a German Catholic colony planned by Fr. Ambrose Jansen with Bernard Schroeder, for whose patron saint it was named; Schroeder gave 12 acres for the cemetery. A combined church, school and sisters’ house was dedicated on November 21, 1878, and a Franciscan friary followed in 1880. The railroad never came. The post office ran from 1879 until 1906, when rural delivery replaced it; in 1915 the town had a little over a hundred people. The church’s 1878 bell now hangs in a belltower in Pawnee Park, Columbus.
