Newman Grove is a village in southwest Madison County, Nebraska, located along US-275 and NE-23. With a population of approximately 736, Newman Grove is a quiet agricultural community that has served the farming families of western Madison County since its founding in the 1870s. The village sits in gently rolling terrain among fields of corn and soybeans that define this part of the Nebraska landscape.

Newman Grove was established in 1879 when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad extended its line through this part of Madison County. The town was named after an early settler, and it quickly grew into a local trade center for surrounding farms. German and Czech immigrant families were among the early settlers, and their heritage is woven into the community's identity. The village grew steadily through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, supporting grain elevators, a depot, local businesses, and schools.

Today Newman Grove maintains its character as a small, close-knit community. Newman Grove Public Schools (home of the Rockets) serves area students. The village retains its agricultural identity, with local businesses, a fire department, and community organizations that keep rural life active.

History

The arrival of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad in 1879 was the founding event for Newman Grove. The railroad brought settlers rapidly, and the town platted and grew within a few years of the line's extension. Like many Nebraska villages of its era, Newman Grove developed a main street with general stores, a bank, implement dealers, and a grain elevator — the full complement of services a farming community required.

The Czech and German heritage of early settlers left a lasting imprint on Newman Grove's culture, with churches and community organizations rooted in those traditions. Newman Grove remained a stable, if modestly sized, community through the 20th century, weathering the agricultural challenges that affected many rural Nebraska towns.
