Marengo, Nebraska

Marengo is a former community in northeastern Hayes County, about ten miles northeast of Hayes Center at roughly 2,980 feet.

History

The post office ran from 1891 until the mid 1930s. Accounts of the name disagree. One nineteenth century reference says the petitioners asked for Suttler, after an old settler and after Suttler Canyon, and that the Post Office Department gave them Marengo instead. Another suggests the name was simply borrowed from a Marengo in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio or Wisconsin.

A claim circulates that the town was founded in 1889 by a French explorer named Felix de Trogoff. No source consulted here supports it, and neither of the standard Nebraska place name references mentions him, so it is set down as unverified.
