About Jalapa
Jalapa is a vanished territorial town on the north side of Maple Creek in Nickerson Township, Dodge County, about 3 miles south of Hooper. Nothing of the town remains; a monument placed by Dodge County in 1928 marks the site.
History
Jalapa City was incorporated by the first Nebraska territorial legislature in March 1855, one of the earliest towns chartered in the Elkhorn valley. Its post office opened on January 18, 1859, with Henry Clay Campbell as postmaster. In July 1859 Jalapa was the gathering point for the volunteer companies called out in the so-called Pawnee War.
When the Elkhorn Valley railroad was built up the valley, the town of Hooper grew on the line to the north, and on July 11, 1870, the Jalapa post office was moved there. Dodge County dedicated a monument at the site on July 5, 1928, the anniversary of the 1859 muster.
