History & Heritage — Willa Cather Country
Red Cloud, Nebraska is the hometown of Willa Cather, one of America's most celebrated novelists. The Willa Cather Foundation preserves her childhood home and numerous sites from her novels — a National Historic Landmark district. The Republican River valley saw some of Nebraska's most dramatic early settlement history, including the Oberlin Massacre of 1878. McCook preserves the home of Senator George Norris, the "Fighting Liberal" who championed rural electrification and the Tennessee Valley Authority. The region's Czech, German, and Scandinavian immigrant heritage is visible in towns from Hebron to Superior.
Hunting & Fishing
Harlan County Reservoir is one of Nebraska's top walleye and white bass fisheries. Medicine Creek Reservoir and Red Willow Reservoir offer excellent fishing and camping. The Republican River and its tributaries provide catfish and bass fishing throughout the region. South Central Nebraska is prime pheasant country — some of the best public access bird hunting in the state is found here. Whitetail deer hunting is excellent in the river-bottom timber along the Republican and its tributaries. The remote canyon country of Hayes and Dundy counties offers outstanding mule deer hunting.

The Willa Cather Spring Conference in Red Cloud draws literary visitors each May. Harlan County Reservoir's fishing tournaments are held throughout summer. McCook hosts a lively county fair and rodeo each summer. The region's small towns celebrate Czech, German, and Scandinavian heritage festivals throughout the year. County fairs run through August across all 18 counties.

McCook is the primary service hub for the southwest region with full lodging, dining, and retail. Hastings and Superior serve the eastern portion of South Central. Plan ahead for remote counties — Hayes, Dundy, and Hitchcock have limited services. Harlan County Reservoir has a well-developed recreation area with camping, lodging nearby in Alma.
