The Thomas P. Kennard House at 1627 H St. was built in 1869 for Thomas P. Kennard, Nebraska's first secretary of state and one of three commissioners who chose Lincoln as the state capital site in 1867. Designed in the Italianate style by Chicago architect John K. Winchell, it is the oldest remaining building in Lincoln's original plat. It was designated the Nebraska Statehood Memorial in 1965, restored for the 1967 centennial and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. History Nebraska operates it as a state historic site.
