This History Nebraska marker on State Street in Guide Rock tells of the Kitkehahki (Republican) Pawnee village that stood across the Republican River from about the 1770s to the 1820s. Lt. Zebulon Pike arrived on September 25, 1806, and persuaded the Pawnee to lower a Spanish flag and raise the American one. The village site is a National Historic Landmark owned by the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation and is not open to the public; the marker is the place to visit. It also explains the name Guide Rock, from the Pawnee landmark bluff Pa-hur.
