NEBCO, Inc. is one of Nebraska's largest privately owned firms, with headquarters at 1815 Y Street in Lincoln. George P. Abel Sr. started the business in 1908 with a hundred dollars' worth of concrete equipment, trading as Abel Construction Company; the firm is still owned and run by the Abel family and now employs more than 1,200 people across Nebraska and neighboring states. NEBCO operates through more than twenty-five subsidiary companies covering ready-mixed concrete, precast products, aggregates and paving, alongside commercial and residential real estate. Its recreation holdings include the Lincoln Saltdogs baseball club and Quarry Oaks Golf Club near Ashland.
