The headquarters of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, which runs about 4,900 miles from Pittsburgh to the mouth of the Columbia River through 16 states, is on the Omaha riverfront next to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. Its visitor center, on the first floor of the National Park Service's regional office, introduces the 1803–1806 Corps of Discovery and the trail's sites up and down the Missouri, including the expedition's 1804 council with the Otoe and Missouria at Council Bluff, north of Omaha.
Visiting: open every day 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Admission is free. A 28-minute film plays on demand, and there is a "Dress Like an Explorer" station, Junior Ranger and B.A.R.K. Ranger programs, passport stamps, a park store and America the Beautiful passes for sale. Pets are not allowed inside (service animals only).
