Happy Jack Peak and Chalk Mine, 80131 Hwy 11, about 2 miles south of Scotia, is a room-and-pillar chalk mine with more than 6,000 feet of passages, billed as the only one of its kind in North America open to the public. Ed Wright began mining the chalk in 1877, an Omaha paint company reopened the mine in the 1930s, and Game and Parks bought the site in 1967; volunteers of the Happy Jack Chalk Mine Association reopened it in 1995 and run the tours. The peak is named for Jack Swearengen, a trapper and scout who lived in the bluffs when settlers arrived in 1872. Mine tours Memorial Day to Labor Day, 10–6 weekdays and 10–7 weekends, other times by appointment; the grounds are free. Phone (308) 245-3276.
