Description

Greeley Center Village Office is the municipal office for Greeley Center, Nebraska, and receives mail at PO Box 330, Greeley, NE 68842. Officially named Greeley Center and commonly shortened to Greeley, the village is the county seat of Greeley County, population 403; the seat was transferred here from Scotia in 1890. The village operates its own municipal water system, which underwent a full overhaul including a new source well, a replacement iron and manganese treatment unit, and new water meters, valves and fire hydrants. That project was funded with a 435,000 dollar Community Development Block Grant, roughly 1.2 million dollars in USDA grants and loans, and a 264,000 dollar local match. The community takes its name from newspaper editor and politician Horace Greeley, and the word Center reflects its position near the geographic centre of the county. Greeley County was settled substantially by Irish Catholic immigrants during the 1870s and 1880s through organised Catholic colonisation, and the area retains a strong Irish heritage. The village dates to 1871, with the town platted in 1887 when the railroad arrived.
