Greeley, the seat of Greeley County, was established in 1871 with the extension of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and takes its name (like the county itself) from newspaper editor and politician Horace Greeley. Historically known as "Greeley Center" for its position near the geographic center of the county, the village has used the shorter "Greeley" in local and current usage for decades. It became county seat in 1890, taking the designation from the county's original seat, Scotia, and is home to the Greeley County Courthouse.

County seat of Greeley County, historically known as "Greeley Center" and named, like the county, for Horace Greeley.
