The Funk Waterfowl Production Area, about 1,994 acres of restored wetland and grassland 1 mile east and 3 miles north of Funk, is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is one of the best birding sites in the Rainwater Basin; in spring 2023, 32 whooping cranes stopped here. The 3-mile Funk-Peterson Wildlife Trail, a National Recreation Trail since 2008, has a boardwalk into the marsh, interpretive signs and an accessible viewing blind. Open year-round, sunrise to sunset; hunting under federal rules with nontoxic shot.
