A pullout on NE 92 beside the North Platte, northwest of Scotts Bluff, has History Nebraska markers, including "Fort Mitchell, 1864–1867," and an Oregon Trail monument. Company H of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry built the post, first called Camp Shuman, in the fall of 1864; it was named for Gen. Robert B. Mitchell, and its garrison took part at Mud Springs and Horse Creek in 1865. Nothing remains, and the site south of the markers is private: view it from the pullout. It was listed on the National Register in 1978.
