This marker, put up in 2019 by History Nebraska and the Indianola Historical Society at 323 D St. (US 6/34) in Indianola, tells of Camp Indianola, north of town. Prisoners of war, mostly Germans captured in North Africa and Italy, began arriving by train in November 1943. The camp covered 250 acres with nearly 200 buildings, held as many as 2,549 men and sent them out to work for area farmers. After the war the Bureau of Reclamation housed dam workers there. The site, listed on the National Register in 2019, is mostly ruins on private land; visit the marker.
