The Calamus State Fish Hatchery, below Virginia Smith Dam at Calamus Reservoir northwest of Burwell, began operating in 1991 and has 51 rubber-lined ponds; it raises rainbow trout, walleye, yellow perch, black crappie and channel catfish for Nebraska waters. Visitor hours are Monday–Friday 10 a.m.–4 p.m., closed state and federal holidays; most areas are closed to drop-in visitors, and groups should arrange tours in advance.
