The Bessey Recreation Complex, on the Middle Loup River about a mile west of Halsey on State Spur 86B, is the main campground of the Nebraska National Forest’s Bessey Ranger District. It is open all year with 48 sites (28 electric, 18 non-electric including tent-only, and 2 group sites). Fees: $15 non-electric, $20 electric, $125 for the electric group site; day use $5 per vehicle or $20 for a calendar-year pass; cash or check. Showers and flush toilets are open mid-May to mid-October; vault toilets and drinking water at the recreation building year round. About half the sites can be reserved at Recreation.gov (877-444-6777) mid-May to mid-October; the rest are first come, first served. A small stocked fish pond with an ADA pier and the trailhead of the OHV trail system are here. Stage 1 fire restrictions have been in effect since July 18, 2026. District office (308) 533-2257.
